The (Un)Necessary Duplicates Project
ABSTRACT:
The first open call for (Un)Necessary Duplicates invited each participant to create an image revolving around one assigned letter of the phrase. Each volume of fine prints is displayed as a group to read "Necessary Duplicates," allowing viewers to notice the differences between the volumes, and the letters within each. The variety of visual interpretations is evidence of its value; and, each year, with added participants, the number of volumes will grow, to create a more dense display of information for future exhibitions. Since it is an open call, with rolling deadlines, please contact Meghan O'Connor at [email protected] to inquire about exhibiting and/ or participating in this project.
THEME:
The idea of something (or someone) being deemed "unnecessary" is an implication of judgement, but on what grounds? Refuge, persecution, survival, and hierarchies can all play into this, when a person is on the wrong side of the judgment that is taking place. This portfolio is a space to explore these themes, opening the doors for empathy, understanding, and diversity, to show that multiple variations of (what some might consider) duplication, are necessary to our survival as artists and as a nation. This project's repeated investigations can hopefully create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subtle differences that coexist.
(Un)Necessary Duplicates provides a space for both artists and viewers to think about what makes something unnecessary, and the irony of editioning fine prints, which are, in their own right, necessary duplicates. The hope is to promote diversity and creativity, by seeing how each individual letter is a different regurgitation and interpretation of the theme.
So far, there are 175 artists involved and it has been exhibited at the Albany County Public Library, for the Mid-America Print Conference, in Laramie, Wyoming; at the MAMO (Mayflower Mobile Gallery), during the Lincoln Calling Festival with Benson First Friday, in Lincoln, NE; at The Dalles Art Center, as part of the Print: Sense of Place exhibition, in The Dalles, OR. It will be exhibited at the B-Side Gallery in Omaha, NE from December 6, 2019 to January 31, 2020 and the Diane KiddGallery of Art at Tiffin University in Tiffin, OH from February 24 to March 25, 2020.
