CASTING FINGERS, CASTING BLAME? (event round 1)
An in-person event
Coastal Carolina University

Outside of Kimball Library
Conway, SC

Event hours:
11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Casting Fingers, Casting Blame?
“Casting Fingers, Casting Blame?” focuses on community, play, and indirect collaboration.  The event includes part of a collection of fingers cast from willing participants combined with a series of lithography and screenprinting.  Each finger has a first and last name provided by its owner.  For each finger dart, I created two drawings based on these names.  These names partially reflect on each participant’s experiences from 2020-22.

What I ask you to do at the event is to choose a finger dart and throw it!  Get some energy out, play, and win a prize!  As you do this, remember its name (we’ll keep a tally), but also think about how you are holding an impression of not only another person’s finger but also their past experiences.  I see this indirect relationship as a metaphor for how we have been interacting with each other during much of the past few years.  I find myself wondering, how do we deal with conflict during a time when we interact so indirectly?  How have we been pointing fingers?  How do we help each other?  How have the ways that we communicate changed?  These are some of the questions I mean to address with this project.

Each of the pink walls is covered in balloons and blank printing matrices.  The balloons are full of media so that when you pop one, the explosion is captured on the plates.  After this event, I will take these matrices and print them as a record of the day’s events to continue the cycle of indirect interaction.  These new fine prints will become part of a larger art exhibition and future events.

I was able to complete this project with assistance from CCU’s Professional Enhancement Grant.  It involves research into the University of Iowa Libraries Special Collections & Archives, and the University of Texas Special Collections.  While there, I studied miniature books and fine prints to learn more about creating imagery at such a small scale.

Skin, Paper, Feathers
“Skin, Paper, Feathers" is a solo art exhibit by Meghan O’Connor, assistant professor of art at Coastal Carolina University. The show runs Aug. 23-Sept. 23.

Through individual and collaborative methods, O’Connor explores diverse printmaking and sculptural processes. “Skin, Paper, Feathers” represents a variety of printmaking and mixed media processes, as well as works that involve community engagement.  Her piece "Fuercitas" in the past has invited participants to arm wrestle with each other.  In its current iteration it invites viewers to take a seat while socially distancing with each other.   O'Connor will be at UNCP Sept. 13 - 15 teaching a lithography workshop and asking people to stick a finger in a cup!  The works created during this workshop will be part of a new body of research entitled "Casting Fingers, Casting Blame?"

There is a closing reception for "Skin, Paper, Feathers" on Sept. 23 from 5 - 6:30 p.m.  At 5 p.m., the artist will give a quick gallery talk.

“Unintended Consequences” is a collaborative art exhibit by two Wayne State College professors — Sarah Lemmon, associate professor of sculpture, and Meghan O’Connor, associate professor of print media. The show runs Jan. 23-Feb. 28.

Through individual and collaborative methods, Lemmon and O’Connor explore diverse printmaking and sculptural processes. “Unintended Consequences” speaks to play, control, and trial-and-error, within studio practice and human behavior. The artists’ inspiration derives from collaboration, relationships, the human condition, and the use of alternative materials. Interactive edible opportunities add a performative component to this exhibit.

Print: Sense of Place
    & (Un)Necessary Duplicates Project

ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION:
From July 25 - August 3, 2019, I was a visiting artist at Little Bear Hill Artist Residency, in The Dalles, OR.  During this time, I made a series of monoprints, taught a 2-day relief workshop at Wahtonka Community School, and hung a printmaking exhibition with Dylan McManus of Little Bear Hill and Scott Stephenson of the Dalles Art Center.  As part of the exhibition, we displayed the (Un)Necessary Duplicates project (vertically, thanks to the construction of two wagon wheels, by an anonymous donor); as well as, some of the monoprints that I created during the residency.

I was a 2019 recipient of the Wasco County Cultural Trust Grant, through the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the Dalles Wasco County Library.  This grant provided for me to travel to complete the residency and to hang the (Un)Necessary Duplicates project as part of the Print: Sense of Place exhibition.

DIG, A Solo Exhibition

DIG is up at the Norfolk Arts Center and the opening is June 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. It is a solo exhibition in both gallery spaces. It is a combination of traditional, flat two-dimensional prints; as well as, installation-type work. I have three large-scale installation pieces. One includes chicken skins, another includes cut paper on the wall depicting corn and birds, and the third is an arm-wrestling table. The arm-wrestling table is surrounded by printed impressions of previous arm-wrestling sessions. Participants rub Vaseline on their hands (for good-sportsmanship) and then arm wrestle. Whoever loses gets their hand pressed onto a lithographic plate, which creates an impression. This is an ongoing project, so these impressions will be printed and continually added to the piece.

(Un)Necessary Duplicates Exhibition and 1st Open Call for Participants

PORTFOLIO ABSTRACT:
(Un)Necessary Duplicates invites each participant to create an image revolving around one assigned letter of the phrase "Necessary Duplicates." Your image needs to be vertically oriented for installation, and the letter should be visible
somehow, though the clarity and visibility is up to the image maker.  Each volume of fine prints will be displayed as a group to read the phrase “Necessary Duplicates,” allowing viewers to notice the differences between the volumes. Since it is an open call, there will be multiple volumes, so feel free to share with other artists.  The deadline for this year is August 15, 2018 (with future rolling deadlines).  Please contact curLymeg88@gmail.com to inquire about exhibiting and/ or participating in this project.

RELATION TO CONFERENCE THEME:
The idea of something (or someone) being deemed “unnecessary” is an implication of judgement, but on what grounds? Refuge, persecution, survival, and hierarchies can all play into this, when a person is on the wrong side of the judgement that is taking place. This portfolio is a space to explore these themes, opening the doors for empathy, understanding, and diversity, to show that multiple variations of (what some might consider) duplication, are necessary to our survival as artists and as a nation. This portfolio’s repeated investigations can hopefully create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subtle differences that coexist.

With this being the first installation of this project, there will be multiple visual presentations of the phrase “Necessary Duplicates” on display to show the importance of diversity, creativity, and community.  The variety of interpretations will be evidence of its value, and each year, with added participants, the number of volumes will grow, to create a more dense display of information for each future exhibit.

This project provides a space for both artists and viewers to think about what makes something unnecessary, and the irony of editioning fine prints, which are, in their own right, necessary duplicates. The hope is to promote diversity and creativity, by seeing how each individual letter is a different regurgitation and interpretation of the theme.

Marble Lithography in Puebla, Mexico

For one month, I lived at Arquetopia, an artist residency in Puebla, Mexico.  Working with the Taller in Museo Erasto Cortes, a printmaking museum, I was able to interact with members of the community and work with marble lithography, a new process for me!  My current work-in-progress revolves around the phrases inspired by my research into the history of the Religious Art Museum of the former Convent of Santa Monica in Puebla.  Inspired by the daily living conditions of these nuns, I wrote the words: attack, resist, I'm sorry, guilt, and hierarchy on pieces of paper.  After folks randomly select a word, they make a hand gesture interpreting it.  I photograph their hands, and this imagery becomes a foundation for marble lithography.  In addition to this, while in Puebla, I arm-wrestled with multiple people, and documented this with paint and glycerin on paper.   Some of these new works will first be exhibited at the Wayne State College Faculty Exhibit October 6- 26, 2017 at the Nordstrand Art Gallery.

My goal in working in this way is not only to interact with more people outside of myself, but also to create pieces that are exploring my feelings toward power: structures, relationships, communication, and a willingness (or unwillingness) to let go.

OCTOBER 2013:  BOY GEORGE JONES

We hosted a visiting artist at MTSU the week of October 1st.  KATY SEALS!!!
She came and worked with the students to create a large (7 foot long) sculpture.  Its a giant possum, an homage to the late George Jones aka "Possum."  The students drew textures inspired by the animal and the country music star.  We burned screens, printed newsprint, and wheat pasted them onto the armature.  The armature (skeleton) was created with cardboard and chicken wire...very high tech!  Anyway, the result was this.  We took it out on campus....you should have seen people's faces.  Maybe you'll see us in Nashville one night.  Video to come....

I would love questions or comments!
