A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. We created these during the COVID-19 outbreak, so we came up with the theme during a time when we were all feeling very trapped by and connected to our chairs!

In fall of 2018, I collaborated with my colleague Dr. Engebretzen, in the Department of Public/ Global Health, to complete an interdisciplinary service-learning project with my Printmaking I class. The students collaborated to come up with a logo/ visual identifier for HEARTS (Hypertension, Education, and Resourcing Talented Students) team members in Nepal, Ethiopia, and Nebraska. As part of her Fulbright, Dr. Engebretzen has been promoting the training of high school students to conduct school and community health screenings in rural areas. These shirts help the trained individuals to be easily identified at these events.
During the semester, we had multiple research, brainstorming, sketching, and voting sessions to choose the final designs. With 15 students in the class, this involved democratic process; as well as collaboration. We worked with Dr. Engebretzen to get the design approved by the international partners, and then, as a class, we printed the front, back, and one sleeve of 150 t-shirts! At the end of this project, Dr. Engebretzen performed a tea ceremony (she learned while overseas with the community partners) to say thank you to the students, and then she took the shirts to the community partners for their training in summer 2019. The students were excited to see the pictures and to know that their work is out in the community and making a difference in people’s health!
